If I got a piranha, could it coexist with the Payara? I'm specifically looking at the Ruby Red Spilo (about 4"). I currently own two Hydrolycus Tatauaias (both about 6"). I used to have three, one of which is being replaced under Aquascapes warranty but turns out they've just sold their last few :(

I know not all ruby reds look like this, but check out the colors :grinno:

In the wild, the Payara's diet mainly consists of piranhas, but it seems in the home aquarium, piranhas can be pretty viscious, some of which have to be kept alone. Don't know what else I'd get from Aquascape that'd be awesome to keep w/o risking my payaras! Anyone have any personal experience or knowledge on this?

i think it's a bad idea. Payara are pretty sissy as juveniles and aggressive pirahna would be a pretty bad mix for them. Also payara grow fast and if they get pig enough the pirahna become expensive meals

It's armatus that eat piranhas really although I am sure Tats would eat juvenile P's, even then captivity is a completely different environment to the rivers they live in where there encounters would be brief. Spilo's eat fins and scales, the Tats would be very easy targets.

So I would say no.

damn. looks like I'll probably wait til next spring when they're back in season. thanks guys!

Hi guys, I have bought 2 pacu fish(juveniles) and since the beginning they were fighting with each other badly ripping off each others fins. So i let them into a bigger tank where i was raising 2 pangasius cat fish and these pangasius cat fishes are little bigger than those pacus so i thought these cat fish wont be bothered. But now one of the pacu fish is fighting with these cat fishes badly and its not letting them to eat and it has bit off little part those pangasius fin tail. I am really worried whether these pacu's will kill my cat fish or will things settle down in time . Few of my friends are also telling that pacu's are normally gentle fish and these could be piranhas .Please advice in case even if these are piranhas can i let them with pangasius cat fish as tank mates.

From my understanding, if fish don't get along, they don't get along! They're not like humans where they can adapt to each other needs.. if u can get pics, it'd help us ID them for you.
