Hey guys so I have a 40g breeder that I would like to put a piranha in. Is there one I could keep? I was thinking about getting a smaller one that grows slowly and moving them into a bigger tank when the time came. I was thinking that Rhoms grow slow so thought that maybe an option?

Yes a smaller rhom would do perfectly in a 40g breeder along with any other smaller Serra. I'd say a rhom would be good in there till it reaches 7 inches or so.

You could grow out a small rhom if you have plans to upgrade in a few years. if you don't want to upgrade I would choose a S. sanchezi or S. macultatus (RRS).

Wimples are cool. Do they eat anything other than scales when in captivity?

Dont get whimples trust me they are boring if you want scale eaters go for exodons ..... if you want to go with a solo serra go with a purple sanchezi or ruby red spilo for life..... any other serra will be fine for at least a couple years in that tank if you get them 5 inches or smaller

Ruby reds don't get to 12"s like gold spilos? Slow growers either way. Irritans could go 40 breeder for life. Expensive tho.

most of the serra can be kept in 40B, pretty much anything smaller than 9" since they are not usually super active. dimension of the 40B isn't really an issue for most piranha as long as you can keep the water quality in check.

This species feeds primarily on fish scales and fins. However, they will eat small fish whole.
Will they turn on each other when they're older?
I've always been intrigued, but shied away due to diet.
