Ok, i've been reading through the threads here and i'm a little confused. Im currently planning for a 125 wide with a senegal, peacock eel, and an african knife. I want something that will swim on the top/middle of the tank, and devour any extra feeders i have, cause i'm breeding convicts. I originally wanted a red belly piranha, but after going through the threads i saw a pic of 5 in a 125, and it looked like they barely fit. I just saw a shoal of piranha's at petsmart, and they didn't seem that big. Do they grow that big, or was this a different type of piranha? Is there a small type of piranha that would work here? If not i think i've found a decent substitute, from what i've read charax gibbosus would work well, but they're hard to find.

Well, the Red belly Piranha or Pygocentrus nattereri can grow up to 12"
But I'm not sure your going to like how the Piranha gets along with your other pets :D But its your money and fish but IMO I wouldn't add a Piranha in there...

Piranhas generaly don't work in a community setting like your discribing everything will end up without fins or maimed or dead

Chances are you just saw baby red bellies, petsmart usualy dosen't carry any others.

Howdy,

Piranhas are illegal in Arkansas. Those were probably pacus that you saw. Besides, senegal, peacock eel, and an african knife would make for tasty, yet expensive, feeders ...

Yeah, those had to be pacus. I am pretty sure petsmart doesn't sell piranhas, especially if they are illegal in Ark. Don't put piranhas in a community like you want. They only work with eachother and that is specific species.

I live in ND and even in a state where piranhas are legal Petsmart does not carry them. They always have pacus on hand though.
