I have 7 red belly piranhas in a 100g tank. they have been doing fine for quite a while. I took the heater out of the tank because they are upstairs and my house stays really warm. I got off from work early due to a power outage and found that the thermometer on my tank was pegged at 86 degrees(no heater). The p's had thrown up what I had fed them earlier today. I just did a 50% wc and added a power head with an airline attachment(268gph) for more airation.. Could they have thrown up their food from the high temp(stress)? Is there anything I'm missing, or anything else I can do?

Thanks in advance for your help,

---Chris

I doubt it was from the high temp. did you overfeed them? They probably got stressed out from the sudden change in the tank if anything (sudden increase in temp, no water flow, lights) You probably got an ammonia spike as well from the thrown up food, so I would do a few more smaller water changes (25%/day) They should be fine though.

P.S 7 in a 100g is a lil much, you have adequate filtration?

did you lose power at your house too? i've had higher temp spikes without my red bellies tossing up a meal

No power loss at the house. The weather here in michigan has been crazy with the temp going up and down like a yoyo. The past few days have been 90 degrees with a few storms mixed in. I did another 25% wc this morning. All my p's are swimming around normal and look healthy. I think they may have gotten stressed from the rise in temp + lack of airation(I have no air stone in the tank). I think the power head did the trick..

Nope, didn't overfeed. They are all around 4" or so. I did another 25% wc this morning. I do 3 wc's a week due to their nasty eating habits.. lol... Filtration is up to par as well. I think they got stressed out due to lack of oxygen in the tank. They seem to be fine this morning..

A 100gal tank isn't gonna have a drastic temp change real fast. With higher temps you need more oxygen. Food might of been bad or just might not of sit well for them. I don't use heaters either. If it gets really high a fan can cool it down some. I don't understand the messy eating part. If they're messy eaters you're over feeding, feeding to fast or feeding the wrong foods.with pygos no food should touch the bottom unless your feeding bbs to fry. Imo anyhow.
