today i built a small floating island for my 25l shrimp tank out of a piece of cork tree bark with some moss and two bromeliads on it, looks pretty neat
but what would be even neater?
something live that crawls around on the island!
obviously, the 25g tank is much too small to provide an adequate home to anthing, and it's also filled to the brim and not covered...
but in less than a year, i'll be getting a >150g piranha tank, and there i could take the floating island concept to the next level
i'd buy a bigger tank than planned, like a 200g tank, fill it with 150g water, and place lots of really big cork chunks with moss & epiphytes in there
obviously, whatever would live on there should never ever go into the water, which pretty much cuts out all small reptiles and amphibians
except for poison arrow frogs, right? they'd look really sweet in there and also be rather easy to feed: place some fruit in there, fruit flies breed and get eaten by the frogs
the could take a dip in the larger bromeliads and wouldn't want to go into the deeper water, would they?
i think they can't even swim, but i'm not sure...
can anybody confirm or deny?
also, imagine the awesomeness of having two of the most feared south american creatures in the same tank :-O
yeah, i know, PA frogs in captivity aren't poisonous unless fed some special lice or something and piranhas aren't that dangerous either, but the idea is pretty sweet anyway, imo
if PA frogs wouldn't work, what about stick insects? or other animals?
any feedback would be appreciated

just because they cant swim, dosent mean they arent going to go in the water

well, i think they can judge if the water is deep or not and rather stay in their private bromeliad pool...if they really can't swim, that is
i'd really like to know beforehand, because a PA frog would be a pretty expensive piranha snack :nilly:
on the other hand, if they breed quickly in those bromeliads, i wouldn't mind one falling in once in a while

DO NOT do that. I am a breeder of PDF and can tell you that that is one of the worse setups you can have for them. They need very little water and should live in dirt-only terrariums.

As a reference, go to the forums and post this question at kentuckyreptileexpo.com and kingsnake.com. Please consider another species of amphibian.

Fire bellied toads, cuban tree frogs, or a Chinese water dragon would be a good choice.

sounds cool but absolutly not! they dartswill drown

may not be what you want but you could "split" the tank with a glass divider. Have one part land and one part water for the piranhas would still be cool
