How common is it for a red bellied piranha to chew through a heater cord? How can I prevent this? Anyone have any tips/experience/theories?

Keep if far enought out of the water or change heaters so it cant get to it. I have had them smash heaters and elctricute themselves so I switched to a plastic housed one. I have had an F0 10" Piraya kill itself by slamming into the the side of the tank too hard that I raised from an inch. Their parinoid idiots! the one I Piraya I have left still runs into the glass when startled. I had 4 12" RB's that did the same thing when you got too close to the tank. Thats why I have been switching over to cichlids. They are more agressive and arent paranoid. I have a 8" F0 Piraya and 4 6" RB's for sale if you want to drive to Wisconsin.

they're probably running into walls because its either a a small tank, or b a small over stocked tank....you can get a stealth heater if your freaked out about them bashing into the heater, mind you if they did break it it wouldnt shock them because its not being grounded. ive heard of maybe one instance on another huge piranha site in about one year so very rarely this happens. redbellies are generally the most skittish out of the pygo group. i owned a group of caribe, it took them about one week to maul food infront of me, about 3 months to get them to grab shrimp from my hand, best group of pygo's ive ever owned, not scared what so ever

my rbps ate in front of me with the lights on within an hour after being transferred to the tank. I don't know if this is unusual, but they certainly don't seem skitish. I have a titaniumheater in their tank, so I'm not concerned about thembreaking it. However, I am concerned that they may chew through the power cord.

i wouldnt even worry a bit about them biting thru it. its happened so rarely its not even an issue. if your worried tho maybe you'd feel more comfortable by putting some pvc piping around the cord

lol i kno this has NOThin to do with p's but i got this 13 inch common pleco its broken 2 heaters -_- damn fish the first one i didnt notice for like a week LOL i had my hands in the tank when i noticed air bubbles in the heater. so ya even if they where to bite it i think there safe as said ^^^above its not grounded well some are but ya fer glass ones they make these plastic cover tings that go around them to protect it there cheap! to :P but small
