hey guys
i need a little advice about setting up a piranha tank (red belly's)
i have kept cold, tropical and salt water fish for a few years now and have kept piranhas before but i can never seem to get the tank scaping to look nice, any advice? im not sure whether to use sand, gravel. rocks or branches etc etc i want it to clean, tidy, open spaces etc. also what filters etc would be good to use. the tank is 120l. 3ft
thanks

and what happens when they grow ? they're not babies anymore and you'd still need a bigger tank

75 gallon minmum so they can actualy turn around when full grown

3-4 in a 75 gallon tank is good for life
or a 40 gallon breeder for 1

Never keep 2 together (always 1 or 3 or more) with 2 there will be one dominant one and only one other fish to receive the agression.... you'll end up with only 1 fish.

well i plan to pick up a 6ft tank once i move house (in 2 months)
but for now a 3ft tank will do for a few baby red bellies. i kept 4 babies in it last time no problem at all. il go for 3 then...that should be ok for a 6ft tank.
im just not sure which filtration method to go. last time i had a standard tropical filter but it wasnt enough because i was feeding them meat

both are bad ideas. Poor piranhas. Next to goldfish, piranhas have to be the most mistreated tropical fish species kept in captivity. Why even ask questions if you're just going to do what you want to do anyway? Suit yourself.

here's some info about what to feed them.

Piranha as you know are very skittish fish. They will get 12" in no time at all. They do best in shoals of 5-6 and require cover. Remembering the three "c's" helped me tremendously when I kept Piranha....cover, current and company. Provide a sandy bottom or smallish gravel. Directional current prefferably at different depths with cover up from the bottom or down from the top like the river environment they are native to.
Dont fight the fact that you will need at least 680L tank. Thats to have healthy success. 680L minimum, and not a show tank but a long tank. Filtration should also be very good as these fish will not take pellet food, they swallow whole chunks as you probably already know.
Piranha are not convenient fish by any sense of the word and if you can only accomodate them in a convenient sized aquarium, them maybe reconsider Piranha...I did. It was fun for about a year. Then, one broken glass lid and stitches from being bitten by a skittish fish and another few years of stressful success, I gave them to a guy who bred them and never looked back.
Good luck.
