Piranha tank mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im guessing you mean pleco by plac.
it depends on how large your tank is because if its to small the piranhas will feel crammed and probably kill each other including the pleco.
If the tank is the right size (such as 300 gallons for 6 full size piranhas) the pleco should be fine as long as the piranhas are well fed.
p.s the type of piranha should be red belly because other types can be too aggressive.

you should swing by the piranha section and ask instead.

the general census is no but some people have had some success, i'm one of them. however, my red bellies managed to break the thermometer and the next day the common pleco was belly up. After attempting to introduce a few plecos of varies size over the next year just to find them chewed up (they were not feed live at all so that's not why they were suddenly eating the plec) i gave up.

here's a link about piranha tankmates, it's 4 years old with people still posting so you're reading about alot of different people's experiences, most of them fails

based on the information youv'e given (8 red bellies piranhas in a 55 gallon tank) not only will your pleco not survive but your'e bound to lose 2-4 piranhas. you really should be looking upward of a 125. i don't recommend keeping even 3 red bellies in anything less then a 75 gallon. it's going to be hell trying to keep up with the bioload eight 6 inch red bellies will be producing in a 55 gallon. they'll be 6 inches after you've had them 6-8 months if you get them at nickel size

i just wanted to add that some people believe in a theory that's successful with exodons.....the theory is if you pack the tank there won't be as much aggression. the difference is red bell piranhas are territorial and shoal for protection......not because they're schooling fish that creates a family support system. you get one piranha chasing another out of it's territority into another's territory and eventually one gets injured or is too slow getting out of someone's territory, once weaken, game over.

I would take the rocks out of both tanks. They look awesome, but the added space will be better for these skittish fish and safer, especially in the smaller tank even with smaller fish.
As for tank mates, they need to be fairly aggressive and large. But, remember, these fish are pack/schooling fish so anything is fair game when its feeding time. Best to get the smallest/youngest you can and feed them regularly and consistently. Pleco should be ok if it can hide...however, if Piranha want to eat it they will...and you wont be able to stop them.
