what would be the best way to set up a tank for piranha? im about to get a few in 3 weeks and would like to go ahead and set up the tank. how many could go in a 55 gal tank? they are still small, maybe around 4 inches rite now. I plan on upgrading to a bigger tank as they grow bigger.

5-6 juvys will work in a 55 until, but after that you need at least 18" width, with a 4'x18" tank you could have 4-5 adults for life, with a 4'x24" or 6'x18" you could have 6-8 imo. A 55 isn't the best footprint for rbp so make sure you get Atleast a 75 if not a 125 that way u upgrade once and do it right.

A general rule is 20 gallons per Piranha but when their younger half that is acceptable, just keep water clean and feed a good varied diet with pellets avoiding live unquarentend fish.

Rbp are the top most neglected fish in the hobby, don't buy them to watch them eat.

Go S. Vettel #1 rb8

Other than the essentials as mentioned above, it really matters on the fk. You cam go with a complete bare tank to absolutely limit any hiding places or coverthe tank with liveplants, driftwood, and etc. I prefer the planted/ wit dw. But that's just a few of us

i didn't know you were planning on planting your tank. you gonna plant the current one or wait til the upgrade?

My daughter's 90gal RBP planted tank started with 10 1/2 inch babies and now has two half grown fish left. They had places to hide and were fed regularly but the little cannibals would regularly gang up on the smallest fish and eat it. Maybe someone with more RBP experience can tell you how to prevent them eating each other. If not I would plan on some losses.

Extremely high mortality rate Chaz. How often were they feed? Did they eat the victims or just mortally wound them?

Generally small feedings daily or a bit more every other day. I adjusted the feedings tell they were not leaving much behind to pollute the water. Sometimes I would feed them and a few hours later they would eat the smallest fish. They always ate them and did not leave anything more than a stripped head. There were also many non fatal wounds that healed extremely fast.

I would like to add some more to the tank. But I do not know if I can find any big enough and am reluctant to pay a lot for potential food. My thought was that growing them all out at the same time would stabilize them better and limit future fatalities.

Suggestions how to do better would be welcome.

yeah....whenever i lost one it was usually after a feeding too and they'd just leave the still gasping for air head. i only lost 2 out of 8 that way though and it was always the largest fish they got taken out. after they ate a tankmate they wouldn't eat for 3-4 days even though i had been feeding them twice a day before the cannibalism.

were they wild RBP by any chance? what temperature was the tank generally at? did the plants/driftwood break up the sight lines? what were they being feed?
