I have a tank of RBPs and for some reason one of my Ps used his teeth like a lawn mower and cut all of my live plants down to the sand. The rest of them attacked the pieces of plant and ate them. Has anyone else experienced this? I would have thought that they would want the plant cover for hiding spots. Also, they are well fed so they weren't hungry, but I never heard of Ps eating plants.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread here...
I've found that keeping piranhas with plants is one of the most frustrating things I've done. On the one hand, they need cover in order to feel at ease, but they absolutely destroy plants. I think you either need really prolific and fast-growing plants, or you need to keep them in low light with driftwood/rockscapes. If you do want them in a planted tank, I think the best thing to do is to introduce the piranhas into an already established tank where the plants are at a decent size.

For plants, I've had the most luck with vals and Amazon Swords.
