looking to breed red belly piranha is it hard can you tell male from female is there someting i should do or just let it happen

any help would be great

as far as i know, there is no way to tell them apart. and breeding red bellies is very difficult. you need a 90 gallon tank for the breeding alone (i think), and you have to raise the temperature and carry out daily water changes and alot more crap. not worth it imo

My LFS has a tank of breeding red bellies. Contrary to the article referenced in this thread, it is relatively easy to spawn and raise these fish.

The setup is a 40 gallon long, and the tank includes 2 females and 3 males, each fish is approximately 5-6 inches long. Breeding color for red bellies turns a shimmering black. They spawn continually, and this group has produced 8 batches, which are pulled immediately and placed in a 10 gallon hatching tank. Spawns are anywhere from 300 to over 1000 eggs. The brooding group rarely scuffle amongst themselves.

I can pull pics of the breeding setup, and fry from several different spawns if anyone is interested.

Very sweet, what is the pH?, pics please?

I had a breeding group in a 90 gallon. I had 4.6 animals together. They started courting in the evenings after the lights went out and spawned about three days later. I wasn't doing anything special. Regular light cycle and feedings. I only did water changes once a month (if that often). The group had been raised together since they were fry. All were about 6"-7" at the time - about two years old. I have it on VHS, but I didn't own a digital camera at the time. :(
