My friends often go fishing once the weather gets better and frequently score catches. However, more often than not, they're salt water fishes. Are there any negative effects from feeding salt water fish fillets to (freshwater) Piranhas? Of course I'd freeze the fillets first.

Also since we're on the topic of food, is it a major concern if I fed my fish the occasional farm raised chicken from Whole Foods? I'm just exploring the possibilities of a more varied diet. They currently eat shrimp, catfish/tilapia, occasional feeders and night crawlers. Have also tried wax worms, frozen (thawed by the time touch it) beef heart and crayfish but it gets way too messy.

I'd love to hear other suggestions for a varied diet!~

many saltwater fish have oily meat, which would leave a layer of it on the surface of your water. As long as it is frozen (destroys bad bacteria) it should be fine. Its not super exciting but try Hikari Cichlid bio-gold or massivore pellets, they make my reds shine :)

and as for the chicken, I'd lean towards no. I work in a butchers shoppe, and many chickens are injected with steroids or antiobiotics. If you can find a chicken breast that is hormone and antiobiotic free, like http://www.purelyallnatural.com/Products/ you'd probably be OK, but I think at least where I work they are like 6 dollars a pound. or more

The oily meat thing didn't cross my mind, don't think I'll be feeding them any then! I'll have to try to find that brand of chicken, price seems reasonable. Appreciate your input!

as long as you feed white fish meat, it should be fine just stay away from salmon and alike cuz it has too much fat. all fish and meat will leave a layer of oil on your water surface but if you keep plenty of surface movement it will be fine, or you can add a surface skimmer to your filter (if you have canister) or if you have wet/dry then you don't have to worry about it.

they can eat chicken, anything really. i'd try beef too. i seen them eat silversides also from the oriental market store, and i think if the fish is white meat then they should be o.k.
