What (if any) type would be good in a 40B (at least for awhile) If I recall, I think there were some species of dwarfs that were solitary... Also, how long could a black piranha (peru) be kept (I think they grow slow) in a 40?

You can keep any small serra in a 40b for awhile. They grow somewhat fast to 6in and then slow down to a about 1/2in a year. You can probably keep a solitary red belly, and that is it. Macs max out around 8-9in I think so that might be good for life. A rhom will need a bigger tank. Time period is based on the size you are looking to get.

Pretty much Any serra would last around 5 years if they were starting out at 1 inch

For life in a 40b

If you are looking to keep the fish the 40b for life, go with one of the smaller serras, like a sanchezi or an irritans. Irritans are hard to find. sanchezis are easier to come by, and more affordable. The two most common variants are "red spilo" and "purple spilo"(which are gorgeous!) At this time, I believe aquascape online has "purple spilo" sanchezis (4"-5") for $85 plus shipping (next day shipping can cost another $80 or so) Good luck and have fun

even a small rhom will do. Most people don't keep them long enough for them to outgrow the tank

Ruby red spirit with freshwater mussels,a banjo cat and some apple snails with a sand. Ottom and some aquatic plants

Sanchezi would be good. They stay small and usually have tons of personality.

If they don't have enough respect for the fish to treat it properly, they should stick with guppies.
I don't think it's a lack of respect. people think they're getting an aggressive, active fish. Most rhoms just sit in the corner and they get bored with them.
