hi i am very new to the site. i used to have cichlid tanks and always with the ultimate goal of starting a piranha tank. for whatever reasons i never got around to it and have lately realized i needed a hobby and love fishtanks still. i thought i would finally get around to starting my piranha tank. i stumbled on this forum and really enjoyed all of the info and pictures. well now it looks like i will need either a permit or they are illegal in colorado. i never knew this. 2 years ago maybe they were this way but a local fish shop offered several different piranha varieties but have since gone out of business.

the questions:

-how do i get a permit?
-will an online shop ship piranha's to a place where the piranha's are illegal?
-will these fish be of quality i will be happy with? (i am picky. one site said they fed them on feeders, i wouldnt be happy with that as that isnt a healthy diet.)

ty everyone in advance for your help, both in this thread and the others i have read.

you'll probably check with your local fish and game about the permit, not too sure since i've never done this before.
vendors are not suppose to ship fish to illegal states, rather they do it or not is a different story.
fish should be in good condition before they ship it out, feeders are only short term while they are in vendor's tank, its just easier for them to feed them feeders than trying to get them on dead food, especially with serra. species. I've seen baby pygos being fed silversides, guess pygos are just not as picky. the most important is you feed the fish good food since it'll be in its long term home under your care.

I think the permits are a loophole sort of situation so that zoos and wildlife places can keep them but I could be wrong. My other thought is why buy online when your fairly close to several states that are legal? Healthy or not I'm a huge fan of sitting in the fish store and watching the fish, scaring them a couple times (not the kid vs tank glass scene mainly to see that there alert), seeing whos the boss, creeping out the employees, wandering away for a while to do it all again and even after all the tests not buying if someones acting too strange in the tank.

Random intresting thing... the two illegal maps dont match up for idaho, one says there legal one says there not. The first map makes WA state look really lonely up in the corner :(

ty guys very much. im looking into local states but not having much luck. if piranha's end up not working out even with online fish store then a cichlid tank will be pretty cool too.

Which is just odd because Washington has much colder winters then Oregon. Regardless, you still find shops with piranhas in Washington. Use to live there

I believe there is another thread regarding piranhas on this Forum. From what I gather, they are LEGAL, as long as they are in private aquaria. Fish Palace sells them and has them on hand pretty often. So does Aqua Imports in Boulder.

dude they are at almost every fish store in colorado- try aquatic imports in boulder, or fish palace in aurora, also maybe denver tropical fish warehouse in aurora also. you can have them in your fish tank all you want, just dont release them.

WOW MADE MY DAY!!! i called a place in denver and they informed me they were illegal. ty guys i will be making more phone calls.

I'm not sure about Colorado but in Utah only the Serrasalmus genus is banned but not Pygocentrus, Pristobrycon, Catoprion, or Pygopristis which is a loophole we use. It has also won in the court system here on several occasions when the UDWR has come in and confiscated legal fish. So check your local laws and know what you are reading.
