Piranhas to grow faster....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Welcome to MFK...heroajumban...
what size are your piranha's....what kind and what size tank.......general suggestions would be to feed them a variety of foods shrimp, krill, white fish fillets, and beefheart.....beefheart is full of protein and makes them grow faster....the tank conditions also play a major factor nothing stunts growth of any fish than swimming around in their own poop.....if you have pygos they grow pretty fast to the 6" mark and then from there they slow down....if you have a serra species than its going to take awhile because most of the fish in that family grow about an inch or two a year

Hiya Heroetc, welcome to MFK, as formulatedfire says it depends on your fish, a varied meaty diet, not just goldfish, and a clean roomy tank will optimize growth, don't force growth, it is bad for the fish.

Blood Worms are what I used. Set them on a feeding ring so they don't go into the substrate.

First of all you need sufficient amount of current and you can supply that with a basic powerhead purchased from a local fish store. You need to have lots of room, if the tank small your fish will also grow very slowly. Powerhead will strenghten your fish and current will give him a good work out that would make him hungrier and healthier.

I had 1 spilo in a 20 gallon tank and other in a 40 gallon they were both 3 inches long. 40 Gallon had a powerhead and 20 gallon had basic filter. in three months. Spilo in 20 gallon did not grow at all and spilo in the 40 gallon was 4.5 inches.

As other people stated it is important for us to know what kind of Ps you have, but since you mentioned piranhas not piranha it suggests you have more then one meaning you have fish of the pygocentrus group.

These fish do grow very fast for the first year. Mine went from nickle sized to 7" in as many months. Here is what I do.

I never feed my fish feeders (goldfish, ruby red, etc) because those type of fish have thiamese (sp?) which inhibats growth. Also I feed my fish a mixed diet with most of it consisting of frozen uncooked shell on shrimp. Nighcrawlers, catfish nuggets, and whole frozen baby blugill rounded out the rest. Ive heard beefheart wasnt good for them so I have stayed away from that as well.

The nightcrawlers I "clean out" before I feed them, what I do is start from the head and squueze down and squirt all the dirt out their ass so it doesnt make a mess in my tank. The catfish and whole bluegills are free since I like to fish but I freeze them for a few weeks to make sure there are now living parasites.

Another important factor is a powerhead. I purchased on that was recemmended for larger tanks then mine. I feel this current keeps them more active, which in turn keeps their metabolism up causing them to eat more and grow more!

Wow that was a long post!
