I am trying to breed my piranhas and I need some suggestions. I have 9 Red Belly Piranhas, they are approximatley 5 inches and for now are in a 75 gallon tank. Please give your input or some suggestions.

piranhas would lay an egg in a leaf, and a breeding process may won't be possible in that 75 gallon tank, the breeding a pair should be separated...observe them well...a friend of mine only breeds them in a big pond with wide leafed plant well not really wide ..just enough for them to stick the eggs

how can i tell if they are female or male? do you know if you have a male or a female? i have 5 in a 90 gallon...which is still to small for them. cuz they say 20gallons per fish. but i wouldnt mind breeding them either but first need to know if i gots a female.

its hard to determine m/f reds. usually when they are ready to breed around 6", they turn to a really dark color. Then the 2 will swim together and what not. I dont think you'll be successful in breeding them in 75 gallon since there are 7 others. Observe your p's for the pair, when you find it, separate them. GL!

I used to have 7 rbps in a 45 gallon and they breeded. I wasn't awared that it had happened until I was sucking frys out during water change.
One thing I do noticed is that there was a period of time that their color gets very dark. I think what you'll have to do is to simulate the difference between dry/wet season because they breed during wet season.
I think what happened in my old 45 gallon that trigged the breeding was that I didn't do water change for a while (been busy) and the water quality probably wasn't at its best and the water level was reduced a little over time (similar to the condition during dry season), then I finally got the chance to change about half of the water (similar to what happen during wet season) then a little later there's baby ps all over my gravel.

The best thing to do is give them a bigger tank say a 180. Piranha pair off and spawn and protect there eggs so they will need a large tank so they can split off from the rest.

To condition them feed them well on lots of meaty foods like mussle, prawn, whitebait etc... and give them plenty of wood and plant cover. Id keep the water soft say a PH of 6.5. And you should be fine.

Where i work we had a pair of RBP in a 30" at " that would spawn most days, a greta fish to breed.
