I was thinking about getting a seccond 110 gallon tank and putting some red bellies in there but I was wondering if anybody had any advice for me allong the lines of tank mates, cleaning, food, and decor, any thing would help. Thanks

Not many options for tank mates, if any. Maybe a pleco, if your lucky.

I haven't kept piranha's but I've read an unlimited amount of stories about failed tank mates, or possible tank mates with 99% of answers being 'nothing'. I have read of a couple people keeping exodon paradoxus (buck-tooth tetra) with them, but I can imagine its a huge hit or miss.

Hopefully someone else can help with details moreso towards their care as I'm not experienced in that aspect.

piranhas will eat any tankmate you put in there sometimes you can get away with a pleco. feed them salad shrimp (uncooked), tilapia, and pellets. (never ever feeder goldfish). lots of decor lots of places to hide, floating plants, dimmed light.

I've seen mice beeing fed? do you think this would effect their eating habbits of tank mates? thinking of just a pleco due to waste and un eaten food...

Welcome to the world of Piranha keeping! You are going to want alot of plants when they are younger it mellows them out. First off for food DO NOT feed them live mice or goldfish, yeah its cool and all to watch them rip the mouse to shreds but mammal flesh isn't that good for them. Their diet should consist of white fleshed fish (like catfish), crustations, and some pellets. For tank mates you can go with a pleco, that's what I got in my tank. For how many you can keep in a 110 it's like 20-25g per piranha they can get up to 12" long and you need alot of room, if they get cramped someone is losing an eye. Keep the water in the high 70's low 80's. If you have any more questions PM me or check out the Piranha forum here :naughty: OH! One more think I hope you like doing water changes because you will have to do them atleast once a week cause piranhas are MESSY!!!!!!!!!!

I keep neons with mine plecos usually are ok if you rbp are fed enough. I don't feed em but why not mice? You guys think a piranha in the wild never eats a mouse or rat? Jungles are full of rodents. What about capibara or tapirs??sorry I know there spelled wrong. Or wild hogs or monkeys.piranhas probably eat more red meat than most people think!!n birds too piranhas don't gather under the birds breeding trees for the view less its the view of baby birds falling to them in the water!

Yeah but usualy feeder mice are sickly it's like feeding them a feeder goldfish more for your entertainment than for nutrition. Plus with live mice the mouse could bite one of your piranhas before they take it out thus leaving a wound that could get infected. Piranhas really don't get red meat that often, I mean how often does a corpse of a mammal come floating down the amazon compared to the HUGE supply of fish that are easier for them to get at.

Piranha probably eat mammals more than everyone thinks! Amazon river are full of alligator, huge snakes ect they all eat mammals n drag them to the depths of the amazon. You think piranha won't capitalize on that?or when the lowlands flood you think they don't get mice, rats ect? Capibaras love the water they spend most their time there. You think piranha don't eat them? Who says red meat are bad for piranhas?who's actually don't studies about this?someone taking their rbp to vet n getting checkups? Think about it jungles are full of mammals, birds, n reptiles. They could very well come across more mammal carcasses than live fish they catch! They are scavengers!I say decide n think for yourself not what a bunch of people THINK they eat in the wild.search the net read some books.I think you'd be surprised just what they eat! I don't buy the no red meat bs!

I was just saying they dont get it all the time and that fish would be what makes up most of their diet. Yeah I'm sure they do get some red meat but not all the time. I'm just against feeding Piranhas live feeder mice because it can be harmful to the Piranhas (possibility of spreading a disease the mouse had or the mouse harming the piranhas) I don't know the exact nutritional value of a feeder mouse but i wouldnt risk feeding my piranhas anything that im no 100% sure on if they are "good" for them or not plus all that fur and un eaten bone will make a huge mess in the tank.

Oh don't get me wrong I'd never feed a mouse to any of my fish either! I love my fish n I'd be really pissed if one of my breeders got bit by a feeder I put in there. I just think everyone blows the no live feed way out of proportion!I fed my rbp a 14" goldfish a month or so ago n they loved it!I'm not against feeding sunfish ect.my piranha get fed a lot of things daily. Pellets to worms to feeders to leeches to crawdads to silversides. I have bout 15-20 things all my pedators eat with 3-4 different things everyday.
