Howdy,

It is said that pirayas are the most cannibalistic pygos, yet, it is also said that there is still a very good chance they can be kept in groups. When I searched MFK I found several reports of people who started out with a group and ended up with just one survivor. Others started out with just one...

Who has personal experience of keeping a group of pirayas
over let's say a couple of years? Please state number and size of animals and size tank.

Thanks,
HarleyK

I have two 7" Pirayas and a 9" ternetzi in a 85g tank and they are getting along just fine. Normal fin-nip at times and chasing around each other at full blast but nothing too savage. They have been housed together for almost 3 months now.

i have a shoal of 6 piraya, at about 11"-13" that i have had for 3.5 years. never had a death. even when i have added new ones. though keep in mind even for a small shoal of 3 you will need atleast a width of 24" and 7' long, and 24" high for when they get bigger.
i have mine in a 9'x4'x4' tank right now

wish i had a camera. one of my horses steped on it.

damn that horse, we want some pics man.

well
<------- that was them when they where about 5"-6" in my 180 gal

I have one piraya for a couple of reasons:
1. They are costly.
2. They are known to be more canniballistic.

However, I have known of someone in Michigan who has successfully kept a shoal. Granted he started with 16 and ended with 9. Nevertheless, he raised them to large sizes for 3 years.
