Is it a bad idea to keep 3 piraya between 4-5" in a 60"Lx20"Hx18"W right now it's a bare bottom with 2 large pieces of wood for hiding which they do. And it will be a planted tank as soon as I get the money. Pirayas are friggin beautiful!:nilly:

they grow about 1" a month (or more depends on feeding, water quality and genetic of the fish) then slow down, forgot the size but other pygos slow down at around 6-8" so will be similar; maybe at bigger size as piraya can get much larger than other pygos.
as for care, similar as rpbs or caribes. I would suggest over filter and plan for a 180g (6'x2'x2') as their get bigger.

piraya are the best piranha in my opinion and the meanest, from what ive seen in my shoal they are the nastiest of pygos, if i were you i would think about adding dither fish to keep there attention off of eachother. although if its going to be a planted tank that has alot of hiding you may see no problems.

jack already stated how fast they grow, mine slowed down alot but they are getting thick.

you should post some pictures of your piraya

Yea I have 5 emerald green corys about 2-3" each they shoal pretty well too 2 are missing tail fins now, and I also had 10 neons that I haven't seen since 2 days ago. I noticed they that they are all distinguishing who's the most dominant the second biggest is the most dominant the biggest is #2 the smallest no one really pays attention to aside from the occasional side swiping when he gets to close for comfort to the other 2. I'll post pics on my next day off.

Howdy,

In about a half year they'll be 8'', then they will slow down. But you're gonna need a bigger tank. Kiss tetras etc good-bye until the pirayas are > 8'', then they'll ignore small fish. Mine are now about 1.5 years and reached 10''. They now live with Endlers and shrimp. They killed them off regularly until they reached 8''.

Great fish, have fun!!!!
