Hi,

Is it possible to keep a shoal of pirhanas and not have them shred each other constantly? Or are they just too temperamental?

yes it is possible to shoal p's however, its gonna be close to impossible to not have them fight every once and a while and not see any battle scars. the only way your not gonna see that is if you just keep 1. Also its gonna depend on how big your shoal is gonna be + your tank/pond size and how well fed they are. If you do it right...it will tend to curb their aggression towards each other but thats still not a guarantee your not gonna see any bitten fish parts or a dead fish every now and then.

sure is.just the possibility that 1 or 2 might get eaten at some point.reds, terns, caribas or pirayas all does well in shoals.
you may avoid casualities, but fin nips are almost inevitable.doesnt matter though.

Doesnt matter to who? lol i wouldnt want my fish swimming around with chunks missing from them

I have 18 pcs pygos shoal in 300 gals for almost 2 yrs now. sizes now from 7" to 12" they're fine. fins snip is common occurences when shoaling. 4 terns, 3 pirayas, 8 caribes and 3 rbps

doesnt matter to the piranhas.the fins grow back quickly.
btw,if you want to avoid fin nips..the only way is to keep just one fish !
all the best..

two schools of thought: first, give them adequate space (the 20 gallon "rule") to minimize stress from crowding and waste accumulation. The second (I just read it recently from another site) would be to keep them in numbers large enough to keep them from establishing territories. There will have to be good filtration and frequent water changes though. The choice is yours.

But how do you give them adaquate space AND pack them in tight enough so that they can't establish terratories?

I think what he is trying to say is you can give them enough space (where they will have their own little territory) so they are not stressed out to the point of aggression, or do the opposite. Keep them packed in so they will never get their own territory. Of course the water changes and filtration need to be ahead of sched. I prefer a 30 gallonish rule. I never had a problem with aggression, actually I hardly ever had a problem with fin nips. (although as said before .... it is pretty much inevitable). The fins do grow back very quickly. I never had any cannibalism or anything. Of course my 220 will be less than 30G per fish, so we will see whats up soon. (and no I do not plan on having all 12 stay in there)
