Breed specific bans don't work because the scum bags using these dogs as weapons just switch to a different breed or got with mutts.
After those idiots in British Parliament banned Pits in 1990 the number of pits dropped but the number of dog bites remained the same. So did the number of fatal dog attacks. They love bans and they never seem to work.
Any dog can kill under the right conditions.
"The most horrifying example of the lack of breed predictability is the October 2000 death of a 6-week-old baby, which was killed by her family's Pomeranian dog. The average weight of a Pomeranian is about 4 pounds, and they are not thought of as a dangerous breed." "Baby Girl Killed by Family Dog," Los Angeles Times, Monday, October 9, 2000, Home Edition, Metro Section, Page B-5.
Completely agree. Any dog is dangerous, some are just more easily persuaded into that way of life. For example you can train a labrador to be extremely aggro but it will be hard work as it goes against the easy nature of the dog but get a german shepherd and it can be done in a couple of weeks.
9 times out of 10 it is the owner. There is that small percentage of dogs that are the true devil dogs you read about and they cannot be controlled. Every dog breed has the odd super aggressive, uncontrollable element but not as many as the "idiots in British Parliament" think nor is it restricted to any one species.
The muppets that weaponise these poor dogs make the wife and myself very sad because we know that dog will be the one that gets kicked and punched when it attacks and ultimately will die because of it's idiot owner using it as a weapon. They will just go and buy another.
The dangerous dogs act here is useless, some groups want to ban all dogs unless you can prove you are using the dog for its bred purpose, ie rotties for sheep herding, St bernard for rescue, labradors for pulling fishing nets in, jack russels for rabbitting. etc. Total nonsense.
There is talk of scrapping the dangerous dogs act so I may eventually get my hands on a pit bull terrier some day. I do however, fear that the dog fighting scene will take off if they are re-introduced, staffies are only a substitute.
The authorities need to start targetting the types of people that own these easily weaponised dogs instead of persecuting individual breeds, bans serve no purpose as the element that use these dogs in this way will keep them or obtain them anyway as the majority already break the law so the soft animal laws are nothing to be afraid of. It just means the law abiding citizen is the one who gets punished, yet again.
