It all comes down to responsibility. Whenever you bring an animal with this kind of power into your home, there has to be a hard line of respect from you AND the animal. Gaining and keeping that mutual respect is paramount. An animal like this needs to be treated with the same caution as a bear or a big cat. Pitbulls are fantastic dogs, but if you are not WELL educated on dog behavior and the PROPER way to control an animal of the magnitude of an apex predator, choose another breed. I have owned and been a part of the lives of many many bully breed dogs all of my life. If you have ever seen one of these dogs go off full tilt, you know that the only difference between them and a bear is a few hundred pounds. Hand to hand, a human would have NO CHANCE of escaping a full on attack by a healthy bulldog. On the other hand, it is very easy to avoid a situation like that. EARLY socialization with other dogs and lots and lots of people. Early and often. Socialization and positive disciplinary reinforcement at an early age are a must. Did I say early and often socialization with lots and lots of other dogs and humans? If not, allow me to say it again. Also, these dogs do not respond well to physical punishment. Learn "pack tactics" and treat your dog as a member of a pack, not as a human. The dog will respect you more and in the long run will be a well behaved, non violent, trustworthy member of your family. Any early signs of aggression should be discouraged and corrected immediatly. By not allowing the dog to become possesive or aggressive towards ANYTHING early in its life, you will establish yourself as an alpha in the dogs eyes, and that is very very important with these breeds. ./end rant
