Wondering what kind of themomoter works best & where to put it in a tropical tank?

Does size of tank matter?

I am using stick-on flat ones, look like sticker strips. Wanna know where is the best place to stick them for the most correct reading, how far from heater, top or bottom etc? I had one that never worked & melted once & another that works great.

Anyone think floating tube ones are better?

Don't use the crappy stickon ones. For a dollar more get the one that goes inside the tank with a little suction cup.

I only use digitals. Place the probe in a moderate to high flow area at least a foot away from your heater.

Digital and in your sump.

I've used both the in-tank thermometers and digital, not much difference, for me anyways. I had them both in the same tank at one time just to compare, I'd say they're about even for accuracy. I also had stick ons, and they just suck. I've never had them even be close to the in-tank or digi therms. I have my in-tank at the farthest point from my heater I guess to make sure the whole tank is the right temp.

 how is that possible. If your sump is 1/3 of your tank, and you're turning your tank over 7times an hour, then you're turning your sump over 21 times an hour so water is only in the sump for max 3minutes.

Damnit I trying to do math again..

I don't use them. I keep the heater set at xx degrees and figure that in the wild the fish go through fluctuations so if I keep the tank in the 76-80 range they will do fine. If I want to get the worked up I do a massive water change and bump it up a few degrees on the dial.

Thanks for all the advice guys!!

Definatly gonna buy an in-water themomoter as soon as I can. But might have to buy a new heater as I think mine broke...water feels colder & heater makes a hissy/rasping noise every minute or so, light is still changing....anyone know whats wrong?
