About to place a order for the following for my 180. It's a standard 180 & it's plumbed 14 ft down to my basement where the is a 60 gallon sump which falls to a 150 gallon rubber maid tub.

Blue line HD 70 return pump
2 Koralia EVOLUTION 1050 High Flow Power Head By Hydor
Seachem Prime
Mag-Float 30 Floating Magnet For Glass Aquariums Only
Spectrum Cichlid Formula, 1mm By New Life International
carbon

Either Bio Balls or Bio Matrix unsure of which to choose. Or something totally different suggestion welcome

Not gonna grab heaters at this point since it 85 today & summer is approaching but will order some titanium heaters in the fall.

Thinking of placing my order with Aquacave so I can do 1 stop shopping.. Anything I'm forgetting? I'm on the fence about a led bubble wand, really thinking about grabbing 1 to accent a huge piece of driftwood I have.

Thanks

eeewwww no bubble wands lol jk but for bio, the bioballs are good in a wetdry trickle setup since they are made to spread water out. if it will be submerged stick to ceramic or sintered glass like seachem matrix. if you wanna get crazy moving bed filter would be best but prob require modification to your setup slightly.

It will be submerged. So ill prob do the Matrix then. Question about the matrix how often should it be cleaned or changed out?

first, pond matrix is the same as matrix, just larger pebbles. i went to dollar store and bought a couple laundry bags and used those to hold the media. id take them out and put them in a bucket when doing waterchanged and run old tank water through em and give them a decent cleaning. never needed changing, i used a 20L bucket for my 500g and fed up to a pound of food at a time and never had ammonia.

+1 for Matrix. I've been using it for over 1 year and I've only shaken it within my sump twice.

What are you running for mechanical filtration?

If it's filter socks, I would recommend ordering from McMaster-Carr: http://www.mcmaster.com/#

Probably just some type of filter floss/filter wool & last pass through a filter sock before it drops to the 150 gallon rubber maid tub.

now do I need the mechanical in my sump before it passes to the biological or vice versa?

You will typically want your mechanical filtration to come before your bio so that it doesn't get all gunked up.

I was thinking that. Now since my sump has a rather large mid section how would this work? Biological on the bottom. Then have mechanical layered on top of that. It will then pass over 4 more baffles before it enters a filter sock, then drops to the Rubbermaid tub, then it will hit my return pump & shoot 14 ft back up to the tank.
