I just got a 55gallon for $10 this last weekend from a friend who had to get rid of it. It has sat outside in the elements for a couple of years so it needs a little TLC. I plan on using it as breeding tank for my rainbows however I seem to have the only extremely aggressive rainbow cichlid to ever swim the earth. I currently have his mate in another tank so that she can eat and live without the fear of getting beaten to death.
I was listening to an interview with Don Conkel where said that he breeds his CA cichlids in groups of 3s instead of pairs, and that a male will gladly fertilize the eggs of 2 females. Now I was thinking of trying this because I believe that his aggression comes from no breeding activity taking place in the tank. So my theory is that if I set up caves on both sides of the tanks foe 2 females he will always have either breeding taking place or fry swimming around and that he will calm down. Plus the females will be on the opposite sides of the tank.
Does anybody think that this is worth trying or am I just setting it up for my male to have 2 females to beat on?
