On the Rio Araguaia, I wish...
I was wondering if anyone had any larger Planiceps from the shipments that came in March 2008 still around and doing well other than me...as well as Piraiba (Brachyplatystoma Filamentosum) from those same shipments. I haven't seen any pics of either lately that have grown out and was just wondering if anyone else had some swimming in a tank/pond out there.

My Planiceps is about 30" and my Piraiba is about 14" at the moment. I will get some updated pics when I'm home again in 2 weeks but they are growing out together in a 480 gallon indoor pond with an Ageneiosus Marmoratus 13" and Temensis Peacock Bass 13" as well.

piraiba grow fairly fast when young and then they slow down. I'm guessing these giant ones we hear about and see pics of must be over 50 years old. Same with wels catfish! As a baby, mine was growing pretty fast, now its growing slow.

my piraibas (I had several) didn't make it because they would freak out at night and jump out so in the morning I'd find a dried catfish but I got it during the same time you got yours, so sad, I will try them again later on in the future.

Horrible update: My mom just called me from the house back home and discovered not only did my Planiceps die this weekend but apparently my Piraiba died also :( This is a terrible find as my two most prized fish are now gone. The Planiceps was pushing 30" and the Piraiba about 14" and both were 1.5years old. It looks like a bad batch of feeders was to blame or a random power outage or something becacuse everything was fine Thursday night and the water temp is fine as well. They will be missed.

EDIT: There was a miscommunication the Piraiba LIVES! my ageneiosus was the other one that didn't make it but that is far easier replaced.

feeders???? Get them onto silversides..........I got my piraibas within 2 weeks on silversides!!

Yes as babies they will take goldfish, but what you do is slowly as the goldfish are gone, put some silversides in there, eventually they get the clue and will take the silversides.

I'm not at home to convert him at the moment that's why they are on feeders still. I will be switching to nightcrawlers and massivore when I get back home for good in December

My planiceps is about 26". I bought three back in 2007/2008 and one I gave to a friend is pushing 30".

Not very cool pets though, very jumpy and constantly banging into everything :screwy:

I'll stick to my RTC's for now on..................

I never had too many cases with my Planiceps being jump the Piraiba on the other hand is the most skittish fish I've owned I think. Although after transferring it from my pond to the 240 it seems to be less so now. Here are a couple crappy camera phone pics for the update because I forgot my real camera at my apartment when I went home :( Pushing about 14"
