hay all,
im planning a 2.5 gal to put on my desk, but have a few Q's befor i start.

for such a small heavily planted tank, is it nessicary to use a filter? i do plan to kepp a FEW SMALL fish in there or maybe a shrimp or two.
do i need a lamp, or can i let the sunlught that gets in light the tank? i know this usually causes algea bloms but i think that the algea will be out competed by the other plants.
what are some good plants to put in this tank? i really like moss balls and would like to (if it's not just going to die) put one in there.

as for the fish/shrimp i was thinking 2-3 harlequin rasporas or neons. if i dont do that just ghost or amano shrimp. any other suggestion/ideas?

any input is GREATLY appreciated.

I have a planted 2.5 gallon that has been running for over a year. Has a sand bottom, some little river rocks, and a small piece of driftwood. I use a little palmer filter on it mainly for circulation. You will need a very small pump to circulate the water, otherwise the surface will get a scum on it which will not allow the proper light to get to your plants. I had 5 cardinals in there at one time, which I would not do again. Right now there are two algae eating shrimp in it. At Christmas, I bred a betta in it, but all the fry die within a week due to all the algae they got stuck in. I try to empty at least 75% of the water every month, which I then add blackwater extract and liquid ferts. for the plants. I also use RO water. I am in Boston right now, but if you want to pm me I will send you a picture of it when I get home next week. If you have any other questions, please feel free to pm.

anyone else?

i would run a small filter on it.

alright well i got an old bubble filter that i had from i TRIED breeding crayfish i'm going to put that in as soon as i fild the air pumpthat it hooks up to.
any suggestions as to what kinds of plants i should put in there? i really like moss balls.

I have a 2.5 gallon nano on my desk. I used ecocomplete substrate, a Red Sea Nanofilter, and a piece of driftwood, which stained the water yellow. I change 50% of the water weekly. I have a glass top and use a mini heater which raises the temp 5-8 degrees. I have a glass cover, which I cut down to make room for the filter. I have a 20 watt mini strip for the plants.

cool, i'll try to see if i can find some of that stuff. don't think the heater is nessicary, kept a 10gal at 75 w/ just filter heat.
what kinds of plants did you put in it?

is that a java ferm in the back left?
