Hey all. I've been out of the game for a couple of years, but do have experience with a number of different setups (up to a 75). However, I've not yet kept fish larger than 12 inches, so naturally that would mean I haven't had marine sharks.

My wife has some schooling under her belt, is looking to become a marine biologist and has a thing for sharks. I've been promising her for ages that I would do this for her, and am finally in a position to do so.

The 230 gallon tank will be in a triangular shape, with the following approximate dimensions: back two sides around 5' in length, with a front face of around 7' (a 6' window). So front face to back corner will be around 4'. Depth will be approximately 30".

I'm looking to rock the corners and have a structure in the center of the tank, leaving a somewhat gradual circular path around the perimeter for active swimmers and hopefully smoothing out the dead spots in the corners (again, with rock/structure to hide plumbing). Substrate will be very fine.

Not sure what to put in here, but I'm forming ideas. I've been doing a lot of reading and wanted to bounce these ideas off of you guys in hopes of confirmation or at least getting pointed in the right direction.

I'm thinking a coral cat or two, zebra moray, marine betta, and of course I'd love to have a smaller ray of some sort in there but am not sure on that yet. My wife would love it, but I don't want to put too strenuous of a bio-load on the tank, and certainly don't want incompatible animals.

I appreciate any constructive feedback and suggestions to get me pointed in the right direction here. Should be a fun build!

Thanks!

Agreed, sounds like a nice marine tank, great tank for a cortez ray or two and a small eels. But the design isn't the best for a shark tank.

Thanks all. Will have to re-think this, I assumed because of the large floor area (eight square feet) I'd be okay, kind of like a funny-shaped pool with a window in the side. :) Still planning to do a shark pool eventually anyway, once I get to that point I might use this for the odd young shark now and then.

But okay. If sharks are out, what eels and rays would you guys suggest? Cortez rays and zebra morays? And what about the marine bettas? Would they all get along in a tank of this size?

If I don't go with larger fish (like sharks) then I want to swing in the other direction and get a little more variety.

Yeah - corner tanks are even worse than retangular tanks for keeping sharks.

Also I'm not sure it's wise to go with a large eel - like the Zebra. Something smaller in the 2-3' range would likely be better. Perhaps as fairly docile species such as Snowflake.

A cortez would likely be the best ray choice.
