I am planning to upgrade my 80 gallon tank in December, and replace it with a 150-180 gallon tank. The new tank will be no more than 6 feet long, but will also be taller and wider than my current tank. I have a couple of questions regarding the new setup because I have never purchased or stocked a large tank before.

I am planning on buying the setup used because I cannot afford to purchase it new. How much would a typical setup of that size usually cost used? I am estimating that I will have about $700 to spend. Is that enough?

Also, as far as stocking, I am wondering how many more fish I will be able to add to my setup, if any. I currently have a Severum, an Oscar, a Blue Acara, a Jurupari, and rainbowfish as dithers. I would like to add one of Rapps Heros Notatus, and EBJD, and maybe a Heckli. Does this sound do-able?

This is what I just got over the weekend used...

150 Gallon drilled tank w/stand: $250
45 Gallon sump: $125

So yeah, I'd say you'll be able to find something for $700

Really, just keep your eyes open on Craigslist and local fish club classifieds. You'll get a feel for what's happening cost-wise in your neck of the woods. Recruit friends (buy them beers) now to help with the move! These things get heavy.

As for stocking, I'd lay back and see what you get tank-wise. A 150g provides a lot of height (which is nice, but not as useful), whereas the 180 will give you a lot more room.

Wow that's a really good deal that you got! Hopefully I'll be able to find something that cheap here. There tends to be a lot of good deals in SoCal luckily.

Thanks Ryan,

I have noticed that this forum actually has some much better deals than craigslist, so I'll keep an eye on both. I'll have to look and see if my local club has a classifieds listing. I'll definitely have to find people to help me move and someone with a huge truck that can fit everything, lol.

I appreciate the feedback on the stocking. I am going to try to find a 6 foot tank because as far as I know, when it comes to stocking, footprint is most important.

Thanks,
Kate

Well If you have all of those fish in the 80 gallon, its overstocked, I would add those and some more dithers. IMO a EBJD would not work, seeing how it will probably get too stressed out from the other larger cichlids

Thanks for the feedback. The fish are currently all small juvies except for my sev and oscar. My sev is 8 inches, oscar is 7 inches, jurupari is 3 inches, blue acara is 3 inches. I am very dilligent with my water changes, so I am sure that if I upgrade by December it won't be a problem.

I am not sure of what you mean about the EBJD's. I have heard of them being kept with Severums and Oscars. I wouldn't add a tiny juvie to the tank. If I purchased a small one, I would grow it out separately.
