hey we are moving onto a lake ( lake minnetonka in minnesota) next winter and i really wanna do a pond becuase i will have acesse to alot of fish to put in it, i was thinkin like sunnys a couple bass and some others mabye a sturgeon to. my question is can i have few kio in there with the sunnys? cuase i knoe they are really agressive....and does anyone think i can jsut keep the fish in there in the winter? becasue they are already so used to cold?

anyone have any other fish ideas?
thanks,chris

Buy your koi locally from breeders using outdoor ponds if possible, they will be better acclimated, also buy fairly standard ones rather than the very fancies. They are tougher.
As long as your pond does not freeze solid and you use a deicer or bubbler to keep an open air hole and get a little water movement going for gas exchange the koi should do fine. You will need to adapt their diet as water cools, there are lots of sites on how to winterize koi.
LMBs are fish that get big and eat fairly large fish, any koi large enough to survive living with bass will have no problem with sunnies, small koi can be mixed with sunnies if not crowded and more than 2/3 the sunnies size.

thats cool, nice job!

thanks for the info........i may just not even get koi and just have all natives in it but i am not sure.

I know somebody with bluegill all sorts of sunnies bass cats and koi. Good luck with your new house and pond.
