planning on getting into discus, but i had some questions.
is there a rule of thumb in how many discus i can keep in a tank?
i have 2 tanks not in use atm, which would be better for housing discus?
120g-48"x24"x24" or a 125g 72"x18"x23"

I would use the 125 just because the length gives them some room to chase and swim. Either would be fine, though.

The rule of thumb is usually 1 discus per 10 gallons, with a minimum of a 55 gallon tank to grow out a group of 6. Are you planning to set this up as a bare bottom tank or a decorated/display tank? There are a couple routes you can go depending on your goals.

Most discus keepers raise out young fish in bare bottom tanks with lots of food and water changes. It's a pain, but it gets the maximum growth out of the fish and ensures that they develop to the full potential that their genetics allow. Bare bottom tanks are easier to keep clean which is the main reason for it.

If you're not up to large and/or frequent water changes, you could always start with larger fish. This would allow you to cut back on the water changes and feeding without worrying too much about stunting the fishes' growth.

Thnx for the reply. I was planning on a semi planted or a biotope, with wild discus. Are there any fishes I should avoid as tankmates? I would like to do a community tank.

agree all the above. Just my personal experience, i like 48x24x24 more 'cause the deep give you more options for decoration and still have room for fish. I used to own a 18" deep and after you put some driftwoods, you won't that much deep anymore.

as far as community goes I have seen Discus with some Platinum Blue angel fish and they looked really nice maybe a couple Cory catfish to help keep the bottom clean , I have heard bad things about Plecos and discus so I would avoid that ... I am sure you will get alot more responces from member who actually keep discus

Ive tried several tank mates with mine and dats are a big no no. now i have clown loaches and a silver aro growin out with mine. the aro is super chill and the cls clean up. It depends on the money your planning on spending also. If you want to spend major bucks go on simplydiscus and find a vendor named heneson i think, he has some awesome wilds, snookn21 also has awesome wilds and they range in price. If you are going to go with planted get wilds that are atleast 4''. If you start out with tiny guys go with a bare tank, the less thats in it the easier they will be to maintain. I had a tig in with mine while it was growing out and he didnt do a thing but if yo get some catfish just watch out. I do 70% water changes every other day and it keeps the tank nice and clean and the fish love it. They arent hard fish to keep but like every other fish they like clean water

Good luck!

with plants I would go for the six foot tamk. I have a 120 (48x24x24). I don't have plants but a lot of wood including two large stumps. the extra width is great.
