I have a space I am turning into a freshwater ray room. I had originally thought of using a 9x18 4500 gallon Intex pool for the main tank and some smaller 300 gallon ones for pups and breeding recup.

I seem to remember seeing some extremely large above ground ponds, say 15 x 20 feet but I have been unable to find anything other than 8x8, the length of 2x4s or landscape timbers.

I tried Borders to find a book on how to splice in multiple boards per side but have been unable to do so. Searches here and on google have yielded nothing.

At what point do I need to worry. I would like something 10ft x 25 ft and anywhere from say 36" to 48" deep.

Can I use 2x4s or do I need landscape timbers? How to the center/corners keep from blowing out and emptying? Anyone have any plans or pictures of what is needed to do this?

Thanks

Is this going in a basement?

If so, the pond can be built into a corner for some support.

Concrete could be an option for walls. Be it block or solid poured walls.

Splicing lumber is a waste of time. LVL's or Glu-Lams will give you the 20' span. They come in standard 7.25 and 9.5" widths with custom sizes up to 13"+ wide. Thickness varies, but a full 2" is common. A search on craiglist, might find a contractor with left overs or lumberyard closing. LVL's running horizontal with timbers as vertcal supports might be plenty solid. Lined with 3/4" or 1" marine grade (expensive but the adhesives used to make MG are super strong) should be pretty dang solid.

How would you join the glu lams at the corners, I assume a welded right angle plate and bolt them through?

I imagine it would not be too much to buy steels and put wood in to the webbing?
