I need some help assessing the health of my plants. I've basically got three kinds in the tank amazon sword, a pygmy sword grass thing from petco, and a 'fluffy' plant from the lfs. I'm running a 6500k light, change about 10% water a week, add a liquid fert 1tsp per water change, and have two angels, five tetras, a cory, and pleco in the tank. The fert is 0-0-1 plant food.

the amazon sword's leaves seem to be loosing mass from the inside out. The grass has developed brown ends when it was previosly sending out runners a lot. The fluffy plant has actually done great on top since I put the new light in two weeks ago, but the bottem is not doing as well. The amazon also has a feathery grey substance growing on some of the leaves which you can barely see in one of the pictures.

Any ideas or is this just typical?

The amazon is still in its emersed form. Let it convert to its submersed form. However, both the amazon and the other plants look to be lacking in the amount of light they are getting. Ditch the fert you are using, isn't balanced. Try to get Flourish and Flourish excel.

I second the recommendation of Flourish and Flourish Excel . . . you might also benefit from Flourish Potassium, I have found it very helpful in maintaining strong leaf growth in Amazons, crypts and others . . .

lol . . . missed that, thanks :duh: . . .

but Seachem Potassum is still a good product, I was really thinking in terms of using it in conjunction with the other products, not as a stand-alone . . .

Well for potassium, I'd go to dry fert.

So as far as emersed vs submersed that is just a time thing I take it? Also is the light not strong enough or do I just need to leave it on longer. Right now they get 10 hours.

a little more info would help. you say that your bulb is 6500K, but you do have more information about what kind of fixture and wattage? is it T8, T5, power compact, etc. . . .

If you are lighting them for 10 hours a day, then you don't have enough light. What size tank, what kind of lighting?
