I know a lot of plant fertilisers have nitrates in them how dose this affect our fish as our main aim is to keep nitrates as low as possible in the aquarium so can using certain ferts be counter productive .

You should only use nitrate fertilizer if your plants consume all the nitrates produced by feeding the fish.
If you have nitrates in the water already they are not the limiting factor for plants growths and therefore there is no need to add them.

Agree with the above.
I usually only use iron, or other non-nitrate, non-phosphate tabs.
