okay i setup a 29g planted for my girlfirends room. i used a thin base layer of laterite, then 40lbs of black sand. I have 1 sword in there, and 1 Red arrowhead. She would a spotted puffer be okay in there, plus climbing perch and either a brown knife or senegal bichir. let me know what you think plant wise and fish wise.

As far as the plants go, I would put way more laterite in there. If you want nice plants, lighting is the biggest issue, but also co2 (for a tank that size diy woud be fine).
For fish, a small puffer would work ok, I wouldn't go bichir or brown knife, unless you are planning to just grow them out.

I would use about an 1/2" thick layer of laterite. Personally I use flourite the most, but a peat moss substrate will help quite a bit too.
