i got 3 questions have you ever done a planted tank with s fish that will uproot them see im going to make a 110 to 120 g tank with large cichlids :headbang2now what i was thinkin is do a small layer of gravel maybe 1 inch and then put down a netting like from oranges spread throughout the floor weight down the corners with big rocks plant the plants kinda into that then cover with the good substrate of eco give the plants bout half a month to root well into the net rocks etc and then let the fish in slow process yes but i figure i have at least another 6 to 12 months before my fish outgrow my 55
and also do you think that a co2 will b neccessary with a well stocked tank ? and do the plants break down fish waste?:screwy:

my thoughts on keeping plants with large fish that will uproot them is to use the following:

1) plants they won't bother with, like onion plants
2) large, well-rooted plants they can't uproot easily, like amazon swords
3) anubias and java ferns that attach to rocks and driftwood
4) several small potted cryptocoryne plants

and use lots of them . . . and with these plants, you wont' need CO2, and yes, they will help with controlling nitrates and other fish wastes . . . for example, I don't gravel-vac my planted tanks, I let the wastes get into the soil
