Hi All!

I have a question about plants that are suitable with snails. First off, I have an Eclipse 3, so it's a really small tank. In it, I've got a water fern, banana plant, wisteria, red ludwigia, and a couple other plants that I can't remember the names of at the moment.

Anyway, I was having an algae problem so I got a snail, one of the cheapo ivory ones at PetsMart. Algae problem solved, but he also really did a number on my red ludwigia and my wisteria. Took the snail out (put it in hubby's tank which has plastic plants) and things were ok for several days but now the algae is returning. :irked:

The snail totally left my water fern and banana plant alone, so it got me to thinking that I'd ask what other plants I could use that he wouldn't destroy. I'd be grateful for any thoughts!

Thanks!

Wow, shrimps are a good idea! Hadn't thought of that. So they'll leave my plants alone, eh?

The only shrimp I see at PetsMart and PetCo are the ghost shrimp, and I thought they were hard to keep? I've heard people talk about cherry? shrimp I think, but I don't know where to get them.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Well I suggest to research mora about algae eating shrimps, check this website:

http://www.shrimpfanatics.com/shrimp-species.html

http://www.petshrimp.com/

but also try google about information about algae eatng shrimps.

Snails and plants are generally ok, so long as it isn't a columbian ramshorn. These snails cannot be kept with any plant and be expected to leave them alone. For the cherry red shrimp, you can look in my sig for them.

Holy cow, those are gorgeous!!! I've seen some really expensive shrimp on Aquabid as well. Is there really a market for them at that price? Makes me think I should become a breeder, ha ha!

Actually, I quite by accident got a ghost shrimp a couple days ago from my LFS. He slipped into the bag with an oto I was getting, and they just gave him to me free instead of trying to get him back out. I have to admit, he's been fascinating to watch and seems to do fine with my little community. I guess I'll maybe get him some buddies, and if all goes well I plan on starting up a 55 gal at home this fall and maybe order some of Wyldfya's cherries. IF that goes well, then maybe I'll *think* about the expensive ones! ;)

In any rate, I've given up on putting my snail back in and the tank seems to be doing good with the oto and shrimp on crud patrol, so I guess I'm no longer worried about plant/snail compatibility.

Cheers!
