So lately I've taken a lot of interest in live planted tanks. I have a 55g with 6 Firemouth juvies and a Con juvie. I went to Petsmart today and picked up what I thought to be an aquatic plant, but turns out it was just Kyoto Grass. :irked: What would be some nice growing plants that will hold up against sifting fish? I'm currently using sand as a substrate.

Amazon Sword plants are very hardy for cichlids and don't need a lot of special treatment to grow well.

Sounds like a good choice. What type of lighting would they require?

Vallisnaria and Hygrophila species should work well too, and there's always the option of plants that grow attached to driftwood like anubias and Java fern.
They should all grow well under a pair of 4' 36 watt T8 ~6500 kelvin fluorescent lights, especially with decent reflectors.

anuibas java fern plants that attach to rock or wood fish dont seem to mess with and those are the only ones u can be safe with from petsmart
