I am new to looking at this section of the site. I think i know this answer already but are there any plants that can survive with a river rock substrate?

what type of lighting will be you using and do you plan on using co2? this will dictate what type of plants you can grow which will in turn help you determine what your substrate should be. there are several plants that can be grown in plain gravel or sand...

I wont be using c02 does that put plants out of the picture? as far as lighting i currenlty have sun glow and actinic bulbs in my fixtures but i have power compacts if i need to use them

no, w/o co2 there are still plenty of plants you can grow. sounds like youre going for a low-tech setup. dont use the power compacts, theyll be too much light if youre not gonna be using co2. normal output fluorescents will work fine, but not those actinic bulbs. youll wanna stay below 10,000K with your lights.

as far as plants, you can pretty much grow any anubias, mosses, java fern, etc. these are good starter plants. and for substrates, you can get whatever you like. plants like anubias and java fern cant be buried in the substrate. you have to tie them to rocks or driftwood...

ok cool. yea i am not going for a crazy set up. I just want something to add a little life to my tanks w/o using fake plants

You can use potted aquarium plants too!

No to derail, but I have a couple of my anubias in the sand (with flourite below the sand) and they seem to be just fine. Will they rot if I do this?

Oh, I forgot.

Before I started my planted setup I did a bit of research, if you want a "plant" substrate, flourite is highly regarded as good because it doesn't cause some of the problems laterite-lined substrates can.
