I'm thinking about starting a planted tank. It would be a 29g with sand substrate and house a hoplo cat, a SA bumblebee cat, madtom cat, and probably a rubberlip pleco. I like sword plants and would like to have a few of those unless theres something that would work better for these fish or be easier to take care of. I'd like to avoid a CO2 system if at all possible. I don't currently know the wattage for my lighting but that can always be changed to fit my needs. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

java moss, java fern, hornwort and anachris do fine without CO2. You could use pygmy chain or microsword or even java moss carpet as a foreground.

You will probably have to upgrade lighting if you want anything as a foreground besides a moss carpet. They are typically high light plants.

Here's a great place to find very easy or low light plants. Generally high light is better (to a point!) BUT YOU CAN grow many plants with the standard lighting from a tank kit. I got some java moss growing very slow (but still growing) and I have 0.6 WPG!!!

PS: sword plants need lots of nutrients in the soil (so I have heard) so you might want to invest in flourite or ecocomplete for them. Or, you could use the non root feeding java fern instead. Both look kinda similar.

Awesome thanks. I'm not sold on any one plant yet so I'll just hunker down and do my research.
