But it has to be the stuff without any added chemicals or "scent blockers" etc. It's ugly though and dosent last very long, bite the bullet and grab some flourite, eco complete, or even just plain old soil imo.

If the issue is money then someone is in the wrong hobby. The cost of the flourite is a drop in the bucket compared to what you can and probably will wind up spending over the course of a year.
