Hi, I want to build a canister filter with a CO2 reactor built in for my planted tank but I have no idea where to start. I have a few 5 gallon pails hanging around and figured one would make a good filter. I've been searching this forum but its slow going and hoped someone has tried this before. Thanks in advance for any help.

You could integrate those into a filter, but probably not by themselves. How big is the tank BTW? In a 55 planted you could get by with a 10g sump with 3x turnover on a pump (remember, it needs to be 3x turnover AFTER it pumps back up 3 feet, not before).

Just search around for it, you can use pretty much any container to make a wet/dry, sump, or refugium. Check all these out on good, as they are all the sameish priniciple, but extremely different.

ive read that sumps on planted tanks are no good since they will gas off a lot of co2 with the extra water agitation...

Yeah, I love sumps, but not for planted tank. I have had good luck running a marineland c series canister with the CO2 injected into the intake. You really have to crank the CO2 up, (well past the necessary point) to cause it to cavitate.
