Planted Tank Substrate

Hello Guys,
I'm planning on setting up a 55 Gal planted tank and I'm wondering what your thoughts are on using plain seeding mix at the bottom of the tank, then a layer of sand and finally gravel. I'll be keeping Barbs and Tetras in this one.

I think you should hang out in the Planted Forum with your question - I moved it for you

If you mean garden store seeding mix - NO! That will only lead to water pollution and algae growth. Get a quality substrate fert like Sera Floredepot (HERE). That works quite well for me

The answer is actually yes, you just have to treat the soil first. It is a process called mineralization.

Great link thank you. I am planning on switching substrate not sure yet what type

an easier alternative to soil is vermiculite. layer that with eco complete on top and you will have quite a nice planted tank!
