im thinking of trying my hand at growing plants.

i have a industrial unit witth free electricity so lighting is not a problem. the problem is the fact that i am only there at weekends.

so my question - is it possible to grow plants without fish in the tank? i need to know as i dont think teh fish will last long only being fed once a week. my only option is an auto feeder.

if i have to use and auto feeder my other idea was to house fish in just a couple of the tanks and not others. would this work?

i will be housing the plants in large plastic tubs and will use a sump for filtration.

i will be basically just growing the plants to sell locally as my lfs is struggling getting healthy plants at the moment.

when i say large plastic tubs i mean storage tubs. they are clear plastic and are basically a fish tank but plastic and very cheap.

OK

yes it is very possible to grow plants WITHOUT fish, but you will have to suppliment with SeaChem Nitrogen.

This will require lighting, so WHAT are your Ideas? What plants are you wanting to grow? If you will be selling them to the LFS then obviously they will be paying you for them so you want to figure in ALL the expenses for cost.

not sure on the plants yet. going to start with easier ones and then move onto more difficult ones.

got loads of shop lights and spare tank lights lying around so they will be the lighting. only main expense is going to be a pump for the sump

You are going to want Excel, Flourish, and Nitrogen for sure or you could use dry ferts.

Are you going to have sand in the tubs?

Swords (with root tabs) would be good
Java ferns (attached to nano wood)
Water-sprite
Banana Plants
Crypts

The only problem I see is that its going to be hard to diagnose a problem with only a top view of the plants.

yeah the tubs will have sand in them. the tubs are clear plastic so i can see into them.

thinking of maybe using dry ferts.

just going to start small and add more tubs as i go.

already got swords growing at home and the rest i can get easily.

starting getting supplies this weekend.

will make a thread about the setup once i start

thanks for the help
