I have sand as my substrate and I would like to plant something more demanding than the corkscrew vals that seem to be doing pretty well right now.

Do I need laterite or fluorite as my substrate, and since I am not about to turn my tank inside out and do a complete replacement, can I either mix in some of that stuff into my sand to enrich it, or maybe replace a few areas where I want to plant with lat/fl?

What would you suggest?

Thanks!

you'll be fine. Laterite and fluorite will help, but aren't necessary by any means. Sand actually works wonderfully for rooting plants since it allows them to spread very well. If you want extra nutrition you can stick pockets of laterite under the sand, or use some root tabs

Though after your plants get rooted, those root tabs don't help all that much.
