So I've got a standarg 30 gal (36"x12"x16") and I just purchased the hood and light a week ago. Its came with a bulb that said 17 watts on it and the bulb is only 24" long. I've been readin here a bit and 3-4 watts per gallon is usually adequet but 24" bulbs are only 20 watts. So what are my options for lighting?

Yeah, your best bet is to be looking at third party lighting systems. There's so many brands out there that I could list, but I'll let you do the research! :) I've been really impressed with my lighting system by current usa.

Another option is to build your own fixture using compact fluorescent bulbs. But you might need some experience in electrical stuff before you embark on that endeavor.
