planting out a com tank

[Starting up]

Hi all. Ive lost touch with this site over the last few years. We had 2 kids and my tanks have suffered. I have only my 4fter going and have lost most of my fish. I'm now wanting to setup a planeted tank with a native australian fish a murry cod. I'm thinking some fin val around the back and sides with some short hair grass patches with sand and gravel to mimic the native rivers out west with timber. I currently have medium size gravel around 5mm with river gravel mixed in. I really dont want to rip down my tank and start again. Should i just add pool filter sand and start planting? Should i be adding root pellets? I want a low tech tank without having to add ferts. Thanks for all your advice
