Plants and these fish

I will be getting a lmb catfish and crappie in my tank and I am wondering if adding real plants would be a good or bad idea. My substrate is going to be sand and gravel with a large drift wood in there as well. Any help is appreciated

I know next to nothing about aquaria but I have fished for crappie my entire life. They like a lot of structure. Weed beds, sunken trees with lots of limbs sticking out. You aren't crappie fishing if you're not getting hung. Just something to think about

catfish a digger? if so then plants will be uprooted constantly.

Shouldn't be an issue with those fish. I kept perch and channel cats for a few years in a planted tank and never had plants uprooted.

Personally, I've never had much luck with plants in sand. Since you wont have any diggers, maybe do a layer of sand on top of some plant substrate...?

Kitty litter under small gravel can grow certain types of native plants, add driftwood and some rocks and your natives will feel right at home.
