Hey guys

Getting a bit fed up with my brackish tank now! :(

I can't find any plants that don't wither away and die because of the salt content in my tank, it makes the whole thing look unsightly...

I was wondering if anyone knew of any plants (or corals??) that thrive in brackish tanks? I have two figure 8 puffers and getting rid of them is not an option, they are my babies, ha!

I have java fern in at the moment (recommendation from LFS as the only plant that would put up with the salt) but after a few days you can tell its struggling... Stunted growth.. leaves dieing within days, holes in the leaves etc etc...

I'd also love to have some sort of corals in there because I think they're beautiful but I'm doubting I could get anything that would stay alive?

And one last thing.. I have some driftwood in the tank that keeps turning my water yellow... it's very annoying.. I've tried boiling it etc.. but does anyone know of any product maybe that I could soak it in as to stop it leaching tannins?

Any help whatsoever would be appreciated guys...

Cheers

Jack

No corals will do well at a SG of 1.005 (suggested for a F8) or lower than 1.025, actually.

I have no references, and haven't tried them in brackish myself, but I would try some species of Caulerpa. The blade or feather caulerpa will probably be the best off...if you acclimate them to your water.

Thanks guys - I'm thinking it may be the fertilizer where I'm going wrong ie. I don't use any! Does anyone have any suggestions on what brand to use?

I currently use Kent Marine "Pro-Plant". I have also used SeaChem Flourish.
