PLANTS for LOW LIGHT HIGH OXYGEN OUTPUT?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Without co2, and proper nutrients few plants will produce a lot of oxygen. Besides that, you'll still need surface agitation, and that will put in plenty of oxygen in most cases.

Water has a saturation point for O2 that depends on several factors but at it's best it's fairly low. Like wyld said...a bubble wand or extra serface agitation is all you really need.

I've got a lot of airstones running (more than necessary) a 12 to 20ppm nitrate count, water agitation out the wazoo, and yet, i can't an oxygen count better than "2mg/l" which is less than ideal. So, i guess i have to add some plants.

I am going to buy one of the following: a 20" 150 watt system or a 20" 250watt system by SunPro. I have a 100 gallons tank. I can buy one light system now and another later.

i also want to get a Co2 system but i don't have the money right now.

what do you think? does this sound like a good plan for building up to a full on plant/oxygen system?

maybe i should put my powerhead in a position that directs the current right along the water surface. i have a lot of current in the tank but as i said, O2 levels are very low.

Either that or you have something using it up at an excessive rate...

Thats a fairly hefty bio-load for a 100 gallon tank and in my opinion will eventully cause you problems...it would be best to house the guppys (feeders?) seperate. What you have to remember is that unless your running a wet/dry bio-filter...then the BB themselves are large scale consumers of O2 so your doubling the demand.

Scrap the air stones in favor of a single hydro5. It not only does a better job of oxyginating the water it also adds a great deal of extra filtration to your tank at no extra cost.
